Gua Sha

PINKNEYS COURT CLINIC

Gua Sha

Literally means ‘to scrape away’. A technique that involves using a scraping tool to apply pressure and friction to the skin, usually on the back, neck, and shoulders. The term gua sha, pronounced  gwahshah, derives its name from the Chinese term for scraping and is sometimes referred to as skin scraping, spooning, or coining.

Stimulates Natural Healing

Gua Sha therapy harnesses the power of pressure and friction to induce numerous health benefits. It excels in enhancing circulation, reducing inflammation, and bolstering overall well-being. By stimulating blood flow and promoting the body’s natural healing mechanisms, it’s used to address a diverse range of ailments, including muscle pain, tension, headaches, and digestive issues. Moreover, it serves as a cosmetic treatment that can rejuvenate the skin and combat signs of aging.

In accordance with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, qi or chi represents the vital energy that circulates within the body. It is widely accepted that maintaining a harmonious and unobstructed flow of this vital energy is crucial for promoting good health and overall well-being.

Many individuals hold the belief that disruptions in the flow of qi can result in blockages, which may manifest as discomfort or tension in muscles and joints. Gua sha is a technique employed to address these energy blockages, with the goal of alleviating aches and stiffness.

Traditional East Asian medicine also recognizes blood stasis or stagnation as a potential source of pain and illness. Gua sha additionally seeks to disperse accumulated or stagnant blood in order to alleviate associated symptoms.
